Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Molly Smart. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Smart has produced a series of fabricated “products” each containing a print and a set of stickers. The work is designed to be altered, allowing images to shift and accumulate, mirroring the instability of narratives surrounding food production; from false farming to controlled agricultural systems. This language of exploitation extends into promotional-style videos on Smart’s social media where fictional brand ambassador Gimmie Moore performs for us.
Artist's Statement
Molly Smart’s practice explores consumer culture as a space where political meaning is constructed, packaged, and sold. Working across film, performance, and sculpture, she adopts the language of commercial products to expose how systems of consumption shape and distort everyday realities.
Smart is a recent graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundeee, holding a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, and is a founding member of Atomic Lens Film Collective.
