Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Becky Brewis. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Brewis has produced 50 votives across five designs: mouth, eye, ear, hands and womb. In ancient Greece and Rome, unwell citizens could buy small models of human body parts - cast as these are in terracotta clay - from roadside vendors to leave as offerings to the gods. Archeologists have found huge stashes of these ‘anatomical votives’ but exactly how they were used remains a mystery. You might gift an ear to cure deafness or to make someone listen… Pick one up and make a wish.
Artist's Statement
Becky Brewis is an artist based in Dundee. Her work explores how the past permeates the present, psychologically and materially, and considers touch, memory and material culture in the context of our contemporary experience of disembodied internet space. She works across drawing, textiles, video and ceramics.
In 2021 she won the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation Bursary and the Degree Show Purchase Prize at Edinburgh College of Art, where she completed an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice. She previously studied on the Royal Drawing School’s funded postgraduate programme. In 2018-19 Becky was artist in residence at the Centre for Philosophy and Visual Art at King’s College London. She was selected by Tina Keane for the Visions in the Nunnery biennial showcase of moving image in 2018 and was shortlisted for the 2017 Jerwood Drawing Prize. She has been awarded residencies in Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, at Hackney's Space Studios and in Scotland at Dumfries House, Embassy Gallery, and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. She is currently Lead Artist on the Young Artist Club at Hospitalfield.
