Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Ahmad Deeni. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Deeni has produced 50 transparent PVC patches ready to adorn your favourite bag, jacket or socks. Encased in silver foil packaging reminiscent of military rations, each edition feels like it’s from the space age, shiny and futuristic. The patches feature QR and barcodes; bold text spells out the works ultimate aim, “SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION”.
Artist's Statement
I always find it difficult to write a statement about the work I produce. Statements by design are used to highlight the themes and narratives found within a body of work, as to collate a picture of who the practitioner is and what they do. For me that is where the issue lies.
In the past I would deep dive into a rhythm of listing titles, defining ideals and what I wanted the specific work of the day to achieve but could never find the words to properly touch upon the past work in an all-encompassing way. Especially in a way that would help define the sort of work an individual could expect from myself in future.
My work becomes indefinable in a collective sense because it is neither restricted to a single medium, nor produced to serve a single cause - life mission or commercialisation – and ultimately, I can’t define it as an explosive self-expression when it has developed to value function over form. I will purposely strip back decoration if I feel it neither adds to the feeling or mood of the piece and feel I am one angsty-meditative steps away from presenting a blank canvas at auction, - for I believe we live in an age where it has all but been said and done - playing a game of trying to say and package what we already know differently. Truths although being many and varied, are rigid and immovable in of their own existence, - a lot of statements read the same.
I say this all to say the work produced acts not to be a statement but by way of function to be addressed as a vehicle to deliver individuals to the many truths and statements that already exist, my productions therefore are invitations to a socialised self-exploration.
