Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Persy Russell. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Russell has produced 50 citizenship packs to the autonomous state of Fishtopia. Each contains a ceramic brooch and passport, adorned with the nation’s crest. Fishtopia, an imagined land developed by Russell, is a space between spaces, a state between states of mind and meaning. Ships are how we manoeuvre through the waters of Fishtopia; friend-ships, citizen-ships, kin-ships. Each passport makes a citizen to a new state; of mind.
Artist's Statement
Persy Russell (b. 1996 then again in 2020) is a Dundee-based artist & writer. Their practice is concerned with ideas, objects & identities that exist across typical definitions and evade the blunt boundaries our language infers to them, as well as utopian modes of thinking and also fish. Fish are of paramount importance. Their work tends to gravitate around ceramics, print, drawing and text.
Russell has been involved in creating work for Generator Projects, IMPACT conference 12, Hen Collective, Newbridge Project, the Planet Abundance Project and the University of Dundee's Archives. They are presently located at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design studying for a degree in Art + Philosophy. Some of their work was long-listed for the Scottish Portrait Award and some other work won a John Byrne Award.
