Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Maria Tolia. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Tolia has produced work inspired by colours and scents from a recent trip to Spain. Inside each pack you’ll find a bundle of Andalucían herbs foraged by Tolia and packed in repurposed teabags. This is accompanied by a small artist’s print. During the trip, Tolia dreamt of birds falling off trees during first light, drinking in the day.
Artist's Statement
My name is Maria, I was born in Athens and I am currently based in Glasgow.
I started making art as an outlet to create a safe space for myself and I want to help other people find that in making things.
I work in drawing, writing, printmaking, and lately I have been exploring a more participatory aspect to my work through installations, workshops and collaborations.
After completing a BA in History and Theory of Art from Athens School of Fine Arts I went on to study Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.
Since graduation I have made a puppet show with my flatmate and have put up an installation together. I took part in a group show at GENERATORprojects where I created an installation of drawings, stick birds and notes I took in the bath tub during lockdown. I've also collaborated with fellow artists in community settings and facilitated outdoor scavenger hunts based on drawing.
The work I made for Volk is inspired by colours and scents from a recent trip to Spain and a new found love for birds. Inside the pack you'll find a bundle of Andalucían herbs I foraged, packed in repurposed teabags. The landscape there was quite dry, and I had dreams of birds falling of trees with the first sunlight to drink the morning dew of the ground herbs, to hydrate and go about their day flying.
