Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Marie-Chantal Hamrock. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Hamrock has produced a publication presented in the style of leaflet, similar to one you may be handed on the street. Nautical imagery is layered with schematics and technical diagrams. Accompanying each publication is a small wooden life buoy, wrapped in blue and white string. If you must, drown tenderly.
Artist's Statement
The symbol of the speculum is deeply embedded in Marie-Chantal Hamrock's work. The word emanates from Latin, meaning mirror and to look.A speculum is both a gynaecological instrument and a mirror. Within her practice it has served as a navigational instrument, a speculative lens through which to observe themes such as sexuality, the esoteric and post-humanism.
Marie creates surreal worlds and alternate universes with complex narratives that are neither linear nor continuous. Using a combination of moving image, writing and object making, they exist in the nebulous space between fact and fiction.
