Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Saoirse Horne. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Horne has produced 50 clay wind whistles, each wrapped in an instructional score. Saoirse asks the audience to hold a gust of wind between their lips and within their hands, guiding it and emulating the wind as it meets architectures, trees and valleys. An exercise in active meditation, the accompanying score will conduct our playing and ‘Deep Listening’. A sound piece is available via the QR code on the score.
Artist's Statement
Influenced by practices of Deep Listening, Saoirse Horne creates fantasy of the wind as an overlord. Dancing between drawing and sonic arts Saoirse hopes to find a translation of winds movements to sound waves and graphite marks; exploring parallels to fluidity of states of emotion, gender, self.

The work encourages audiences to feel the weather, allow it to become part of our body, our surroundings. Hear how it meets you, through your hair, courses from your throat down your windpipe and finds home in the lungs. These works of fantasy imagine futures of wind powered electricity, harkening back to past attitudes towards weather as found in works of weatherlore.
