Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Isla Valentine Wade. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief, Wade has produced 50 editions titularly inspired by the writings of Russian-American novelist and poet Vladimir Nabokov. Each painted board is a fractured piece of larger works that can be viewed alone, paired off with a new board, or combined with its original set. Wade’s painting style is full of joy as she creates rhythmic, abstracted images full of colour.
Artist's Statement
Isla Valentine Wade is an abstract painter who lives and works in Dundee. Words and spliced phrases form the basis for her colour-focused abstractions, with emphasis being placed on the  detached meaning of words. For Volk Gallery, the title ‘Something remained- a riddle- a splinter’ was reduced from Vladimir Nabokov’s 1930 novel ‘The Defense’. The works themselves are not representations of the text, but are a physical depiction of the genuine pleasure between the painter and the ambiguous word. Most importantly, what underlines her practice is a joy for making a mess with paint. The wee ‘splintered’ panels are composed of fragments of work on paper, with the hope that multiple people will have a shard of the same painting. Some of the panels have been grouped together, but can be arranged whichever way is desired.
